TSIN in once again partnering with technology leader EVERFI to bring the Endeavor STEM Readiness course to all middle schools in the state of Tennessee. Endeavor is an engaging and interactive online program designed to help middle school students explore and map STEM careers. Featuring both online modules and supplementary lesson plans, the Endeavor program can be used by educators across subject areas to jumpstart career exploration and instill STEM problem-solving habits. Highlights of the program include an interests and learning-style assessment to match students with careers, 4 interactive modules exposing students to industries such as healthcare and advanced manufacturing, and targeted career cards that expose students to in-demand STEM jobs in those fields. To kick-off another year of the partnership, we caught up with STEM instructor Carlos Calderon Diaz to hear how Endeavor impacted his classroom.
Diaz teaches at William Henry Oliver Middle School in Nashville and has incorporated TSIN’s Endeavor into his curriculum. Diaz began his teaching career in 1988 and has taught in schools around the world, including China, New York, Chicago, Canada, Argentina and the Dominican Republic. “Having committed partners like TSIN and EVERFI has been something that has really opened the doors to my class and my teaching experience with my students'', said Diaz. According to Diaz, the TSIN Endeavor STEM Readiness course has helped provide a bridge that connects student’s interests like music, technology or fashion to the STEM careers that are powering innovation. “Using Endeavor has engaged new students that didn’t initially like science and math. It allowed students to learn the material and say ‘wow this is actually cool’”.
By providing Endeavo r to schools across Tennessee, TSIN seeks to provide a unique tool to support cross-disciplinary STEM learning. An integrated STEM approach teaches students not to think in a silo, but rather shows them that creative and critical thinking are necessary across all disciplines. Diaz echoed this idea by reiterating how the course gives many students a new hope for their future and “allows his students to identify more career opportunities as they transition into high school”.
The Endeavor program is available to all Tennessee middle schools for free through the partnership with TSIN.
