Battelle and TSIN sponsor eVOL9 Engineering Camp at the University of Tennessee

Last week in Knoxville, 31 ninth graders from four states had the opportunity to participate in the Engineering Volunteers for Ninth Graders (eVOL9) camp hosted by the UT College of Engineering. The college’s Engineering Diversity Programs Office offers the summer engineering program, which has hosted a total of 230 middle school students and has grown from 23 participants in 2000 to 31 in 2013. Last week in Knoxville, 31 ninth graders from four states had the opportunity to participate in the  Engineering Volunteers for Ninth Graders (eVOL9) camp hosted by the UT College of Engineering. The college’s Engineering Diversity Programs Office offers the summer engineering program, which has hosted a total of 230 middle school students and has grown from 23 participants in 2000 to 31 in 2013. This year’s camp was sponsored by Battelle and the TSIN.

Participants lived on campus in the HESS Residential Hall and spent the week learning about careers in engineering, visiting engineering labs and facilities, participating in ACT math review sessions, competing in engineering challenges, cultivating new friendships, and getting a jump-start on their academic careers. They built marshmallow catapults, foam board chairs, drinking straw bridges, and ended the week with a tour of the Alcoa plant. Faculty members Jenny Retherford and Michael Gilbert, as well as nine student counselors from the College of Engineering, served to inspire and challenge the campers.

“eVOL9’s hands-on, project-based approach complements the TSIN’s vision for well-rounded students who can expand our state’s capacity for innovation,” said Wesley Hall, Director of Client Engagement at the TSIN.
