After nearly two years in its test phase, STEM Scouts, a $1.9 million pilot program in the Knoxville area by the Boy Scouts of America, is planning to go nationwide in May 2015.

The program shows youth from elementary through high school how to apply STEM in their everyday lives and encourages them to develop those experiences into a future career.

STEM Scouts are grouped into “laboratories,” and the first pilot laboratories began in Spring of 2014 at the Clayton-Bradley Academy in Maryville followed by Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge. UT-Battelle, which operates Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy, chartered Oak Ridge High School’s lab and additional funding for the program was provided by the TSIN’s STEMspark STEM Innovation Hub in Knoxville.

The program is open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 12, and so far the pilot program in East Tennessee has attracted 130 participants, with those numbers expected to more than double by the end of the school year.
