Today, the Tennessee Department of Education released the statewide results for the 2013-2014 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP).   The statewide results provide additional insight for areas of needed focus in the coming year and provide a pulse-check on our state’s commitment to raising the bar in the classroom. We celebrate with students and educators that this year’s TCAP scores demonstrate sustained growth in mathematics and science!

This year’s data bodes well for our efforts to improve and expand the teaching of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) statewide. Results show that approximately 100,000 additional Tennessee students are on grade level in math and 57,000 additional students are on grade level in science compared to 2010 statewide TCAP results. Particularly strong growth was shown in high school mathematics, leading to a greater level of readiness for those students about to enter college and career.

Strong student performances in STEM education are vital to Tennessee’s future well-being. STEM knowledge is a core requirement for careers in some of the fastest-growing industries across the Volunteer State and is closely linked with our economic strength and competitiveness. We applaud the hard work of Tennessee’s educators and students and celebrate that our state is continuing on the road to becoming a national leader in STEM preparedness.
