In honor of Computer Science Education Week, Hour of Code has challenged schools across the country to introduce their students to the world of coding. Here at the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, we encourage schools and students across Tennessee to participate in the Hour of Code Challenge.
Coding provides students with foundational STEM skills, including problem solving and critical thinking, while preparing them to lead our increasingly digitized workforce. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to the basics of coding through interactive, student friendly activities. They can be self-guided or teacher-led, and students can engage in experiences related to Minecraft, Star Wars or even Disney.
Tennessee #FutureCoder competition
We know there is no better way for a student to demonstrate mastery than to teach what they learned to someone else. To equip our students to be lead learners, we are encouraging all students who participate in Hour of Code to share what they learned with an adult .
Rules
- Do an Hour of Code with your students (in class or outside of class) anytime between now and December 10th.
- Challenge your student to do Hour of Code with an adult (parent, grandparent, community member, school faculty member) and snap a picture
- Have students post the photo of them with their adult on Twitter or you can post it for them. To participate in the competition, the Tweet should include:
- The hashtag #FutureCoder
- The school name (or twitter handle) and location
- Tag @theTSIN
- Upload your picture and log your points on MakerMinded to help your school get to the top of the leaderboard and potentially earn awesome prizes!
We are excited to see how your school engages with Hour of Code! Together, we can ensure that Computer Science is available for all students.
