When we look at best practices for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, we find that summer offers a unique opportunity for students to engage and learn in ways that mirror real-world needs, while also drawing on the practices that make these learning activities most successful. Starting this summer, all school districts in Tennessee will offer in-person learning loss remediation and student acceleration programs, including summer learning camps, after-school learning mini-camps, and learning loss bridge camps.
The after-school Summer Learning Mini-Camps (Summer 2021 and Summer 2022) are also known as “STREAM” Mini-Camps. STREAM is Science Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Sharingthe wonder of STREAM learning in an interactive summer camp environment encourages students to explore at their own pace and inspires unbounded creativity. Creative problem solving is one of the top soft skills educators work to instill in their students. Students can build this skill by analyzing situations and trying different methods to find a solution. That's where the newly released Summer STREAM Mini-Camp training and resource set comes in.
TSIN has partnered with the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) to provide an in-depth STREAM training module for the Summer STREAM Mini-Camps that can be accessed here. If you are planning to facilitate a STREAM Mini-Camp this summer, then this training and resource set are what you need! There are two parts to the TDOE training: 1) A foundational course that outlines summer learning expectations
and 2) An optional lesson that focuses solely on STREAM Integration titled AET101 Summer Learning Training Course for Aspiring and Alternative Educators.
Once you have completed the pre-requisite course on summer learning, the TSIN STREAM Mini-Camp training can be found under the "Choosing Your Optional Lesson" at the end of the course. You can also access the full teacher toolkit here which includes all materials provided for STREAM Mini-Camp implementation.
The modules within the AET101 Summer Learning Training Course for Aspiring and Alternative Educators cover a holistic view of STREAM learning and implementation, design and implementation of STREAM integrated lessons for grades K-8, Project/Problem-Based Learning (PBL) strategies and tools, and the role of assessment within STREAM performance tasks.
TSIN has partnered with Defined Learning to offer ready-to-use modules as a part of this training for districts to use to create their own STREAM Mini-Camp content. Use of the vendor-created resources or department-created models is optional. Within the course, teachers will be given access to seven units that are prepared and ready for teachers to implement without any additional planning. Each unit provides seven hours of learning or one week of lessons per unit. The themes for these units cover everything from animals to entrepreneurship. You can explore those themes here.
If you have questions or want to learn more, please join one of Defined Learning's scheduled webinars. These 20 minute live webinars, hosted from May 11 - 27, will focus on access information, navigation of the site as well as sharing the designated Summer Stream Performance Tasks with students. This is a great opportunity to get any questions you might have answered!
Thanks to our partners at Defined Learning for providing standards-aligned, engaging STREAM performance tasks to all Tennessee STREAM Mini-Camp facilitators at no cost! It's a core mission for the TSIN team to provide resource sets that encourage integrated learning and creative problem-solving. We hope that your district finds these materials useful as you prepare for and implement the Summer STREAM Mini-Camps.
