Hub and school leaders from the TSIN had the good fortune to play an organizing role in the 2012 AIA & NDIA Tennessee STEM Workforce Development Conference that convened at Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma last week.
The conference brought together leaders from K-12 education, higher education, aerospace and defense, business, and the community to discuss how we can all collaborate to solve our STEM workforce shortages in the coming years. Participants heard presentations about the state of STEM in our state before breaking into workgroups to tackle specific aspects of the problem, such as best practices in government and industry engagement and best practices in STEM curriculum design and teaching. The conversation was both enlightening and challenging and is ongoing through official and unofficial channels.
The event culiminated in a lunch where Deputy Commissioner of Education Kathleen Airhart revealed Tennessee’s STEM Strategic Plan and discussed how everyone in the room can contribute to our state’s future.
Special thanks to Stan Duncan of Syner-G , Andy White of the Aerospace & Defense MBA Program at the University of Tennessee, and Ruth Woodall of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce for their leadership in bringing us all together. Also to The Tullahoma News and reporter Andrea Agardy for their thorough coverage of the proceedings.
